What I Learned About Integrity from a Lost Wallet in Israel
A month ago, I landed in Israel after a 12-hour flight. It was 5 p.m., and I was exhausted but excited. I hopped into a cab, hungry and ready to head to Jerusalem to meet my family—they were waiting for me to arrive so we could finally sit down for a good dinner.
Then I saw it.
A wallet. Sitting right there on the seat beside me.
My first thought: Oh no—someone lost their wallet.
And this wasn’t the first time this had happened to me.
Once, I found a bag with $800 in cash. Another time, I spotted a wallet on the street right outside my apartment in New York. Both times, I tracked down the owner. Both times, I had a choice.
And here I was again, with a choice.
This time, I was in a foreign country. The cab driver didn’t speak English. I wondered: Can I trust him to handle this? Will he try to return it? Will he even notice?
I didn’t know.
So I took matters into my own hands.
When I got to my hotel, I gave the wallet to the concierge. They helped me locate the owner. He didn’t speak English either—but gratitude doesn’t need translation. The look in his eyes said everything.
Here’s the real question: Why does this keep happening to me?
Three times is no coincidence. Maybe I’m being reminded of something deeper. It’s not about a wallet—it’s about who you are when no one’s watching.
It’s about integrity.
Integrity is built in the quiet moments.
When no one is watching.
When there’s no applause.
When the right thing is harder than the easy thing.
These small decisions? The ones no one sees? They shape who you are.
They’re the training ground for the bigger moments.
If you cut corners when the stakes are low, you’ll likely do it when the stakes are high. But when you consistently choose the right thing—especially when it’s inconvenient—you build a reputation. A relationship with yourself. A sense of pride that no one can take away.
When you do the right thing, even when it’s hard, you build self-respect. You begin to love the person you’re becoming. And that matters.
Because how you do anything is how you do everything.
The little choices matter.
They bleed into how you show up in your work.
In your relationships.
In your goals.
In your life.
And here’s the best part:
Doing the right thing feels good.
Not because anyone’s watching.
Not because you’ll get credit.
But because you’re living in alignment with your values. With who you want to be.
Aligning Actions with Values
Here’s a simple framework to help build that integrity muscle day to day:
1. Pause & Ask:
What value do I want to stand for right now?
2. Choose the Hard Right Over the Easy Wrong:
It’s not always comfortable, but it is always clear. The “hard right” builds you.
3. Reflect & Reinforce:
Afterwards, take a moment to reflect: How did that choice reflect who I want to be?
That’s how self-respect is built. One aligned decision at a time.
Final Reflection: Who Are You Becoming?
The small moments matter.
Not just because of what others see. But because of what you feel.
Doing the right thing—even when no one knows—reminds you of who you are.
That’s what mental fitness looks like: living in alignment.
So here’s my challenge for you:
Think about the last time you had a choice—between the easy way and the right way.
Which one did you take?
And the next time you find yourself in that moment…
Which one will you take?
I’d love to hear your thoughts. Hit reply and tell me:
What does integrity mean to you?
